Walt Disney Pictures (NYSE: DIS) blockbuster superhero film, 'The Avengers', continues to topple box office records.
The movie based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name has grossed over $600 million at the US box office, a feat achieved by only two movies so far in the history of the US cinema.
James Cameron magnum opus, 'Titanic' (1997), raked in a total of $600.8 million after its initial domestic run and pulled in over $57 million more in its 3-D re-release last spring, while his other flick 'Avatar' (2009), sits at the top with a record shattering $760.5 million in the US box office receipts.
'The Avengers' juggernaut is still causing a rumble at the box office. For the 22nd-24th June week-end, the movie occupied the eighth spot, gathering $7.2 million in ticket sales. The film, which holds the record for touching the $300, $400 and $500 million marks in quickest time is likely to add some more bucks to Disney's overflowing coffer in wake of the upcoming July 4 holiday.
