Samsung Electronics Co is planning to release a tablet featuring
Microsoft Corp’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows RT software when the operating
system is launched. Windows RT devices are likely to be released in
October but Samsung has already made a handheld computer built on this
device that works on ARM Holdings Plc (NASDAQ: ARMH) technology.
After Hewlett-Packard Co (NYSE: HPQ) declined last week to back Windows RT, the decision by Samsung comes as a boon to Microsoft‘s efforts to use multiple versions of its Windows operating system to challenge Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) in the field of tablets. Hewlett-Packard has instead, opted to use Windows 8 in the tablet that it is planning to introduce. Windows 8 works only on so-called x86 chips, made by Intel Corp (NASDAQ: INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NYSE: AMD) .
Qualcomm Inc’s (NASDAQ: QCOM) Snapdragon processor will be used by Samsung in its Windows RT tablet. Phone chip makers Qualcomm, Texas Instruments Inc (NASDAQ: TXN) and Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ: NVDA) are now getting an opportunity because of Windows RT to compete against Intel and AMD for orders in the computer industry.
